Women living in Lidcombe are being invited to access free and potentially lifesaving breast screening.
The BreastScreen NSW mobile van, staffed and supported by Westmead Hospital, will be in the area from 12 – 26 March providing free mammograms to eligible women.
A mammogram can detect tiny cancers that cannot be seen or felt.
In NSW one in seven women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. For women over 50 years, a mammogram is the most effective method of finding breast cancer early.
BreastScreen NSW Sydney West director Associate Professor Nirmala Pathmanathan said a mammogram is one of the most important tests for women aged between 50-74 years.
“A mammogram every two years takes just 20 minutes and it could save your life,” Nirmala said.
“Detecting breast cancer early increases your chance of survival while reducing the likelihood of invasive treatment, such as mastectomy or chemotherapy.
“Many women believe they aren’t at risk of breast cancer because there’s no family history of the disease, but 90 per cent of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history.
“Breast cancer screening is so important which is why we are bringing the service to the public – having the van located in a central location in Lidcombe will make it easier for women to book in a screening.
“Life gets busy but we want women to make their health a priority.”
The BreastScreen NSW van will be available from 12-26 March at Hastings St, Lidcombe just outside Lidcombe Shopping Centre.
The service is free and there is no referral needed – just walk up to the van.
BreastScreen NSW mobile vans include the latest digital mammography technology.
Year round screening services are available at BreastScreen NSW clinics at Auburn Hospital and Myer Parramatta.

The NSW Government, through the Cancer Institute NSW, is investing $62.2 million in breast cancer screening this financial year.
