BCI Support Services

The Westmead Breast Cancer Institute aims to inform patients, and the general public through educational events and support programs. Breast cancer patients, their families and friends are invited to participate in the activities listed. Most activities are free of charge. All support programs for 2011 are listed below. Ask the Specialist

An information and education session designed as a once only session for women/men with a recent diagnosis of breast cancer, their families and friends.

BCI Mates Group

A workshop for men whose partners have had a diagnosis of breast cancer. The Mates session is an opportunity to talk with other men about the challenges you and your family are facing.

Breast Care Nurses

The Breast Care Nurses are registered nurses who have undertaken specialised training. They are available at Westmead, Mt Druitt, Nepean and Auburn Hospitals to provide information and support to women and their families before and after surgery and during other treatment for breast cancer.

To speak to a Breast Care Nurse, phone 9845 8472 or 9845 5606 and leave a message or phone 9845 5555 and ask to page 22641 or 27817.

Diet, Nutrition and Breast Cancer

A free group session with an Oncology Dietician. Learn about healthy eating before, during and after treatment

A clinic for patients to speak to an Oncology Dietician about treatment symptoms including weight gain or loss, lethargy and nausea.

Familial Cancer Service

An assessment clinic for woman whose family history may put them at higher than usual risk of breast cancer and other cancers. The clinic is run by specialists in cancer genetics. Genetic testing may be appropriate for some families.

Medical referral required.
