The NSW Breast Cancer Institute held its annual Public Forum on Saturday, 25th August 2007. This year’s focus was ‘Life After Breast Cancer’.
The 2007 Public Forum was held at Westmead Hospital and was satellite broadcast live via SKY Channel to 60 locations across Australia, reaching locations from Cairns, QLD to Hobart, TAS and from Westmead, NSW to Bunbury, WA. One of the main aims of the NSW BCI is to reach remote and rural locations via our Public Forum and we were pleased to include areas such as Kalgoorlie and Broome in WA, Nhulunbuy and Tennant Creek in NT and Nyngan and Bourke in NSW, plus many many more.
The public forum could not be possible without the assistance of our Site Coordinators who volunteer their time to ensure that this important information is available to women and their families in their communities. We would like to once again extend our warm thanks to them.
The Public Forum included special guest speakers such as:-
Dr Rosie King – a well known and highly regarded Sex Therapist and Educator who spoke about sexuality after breast cancer.
Prof. Robert Newton – Foundation Professor Exercise and Sports Science, and Director of the Vario Health Institute at Edith Cowan University in Perth, WA. Professor Newton spoke about the importance of exercise after treatment.
Dr Kirsty Stuart – Radiation Oncologist at Westmead Hospital and at the NSW Breast Cancer Institute who spoke about the medical issues associated with life after breast cancer.
Dr Jemma Gilchrist – Senior Clinical Psychologist with the Dept of Psycho-oncology at Westmead Cancer care Centre. Dr Gilchrist spoke about living with uncertainty.
Ms Margaret Collins – Specialist Breast Care Nurse for Greater Western Area Health Service in Dubbo who discussed the special issues for rural women with breast cancer.
Ms Jennifer Bradley – a rural woman living and working in the central west of NSW gave a great account of the issues faced by rural women with breast cancer.
Ms Vivienne Jarratt – married with three children, she has worked as a workplace trainer and currently teaches aqua fitness classes. Ms Jarratt spoke of her personal journey with breast cancer.
A DVD of this year’s Public Forum will be available to purchase for $10 in a few weeks time. You can order by downloading an order form from our website or by phoning on 02 9845 6728.
