Breast cancer expert warns against thermography
The promotion of new breast thermography services in the Sydney West area has prompted the NSW Breast Cancer Institute (NSW BCI) to warn that the alternative screening technique was less effective in detecting breast cancer and more costly than the free mammograms offered by BreastScreen.

Executive Director Professor John Boyages said thermography is not supported by either BreastScreen Australia or the National Breast Cancer Centre .

Professor Boyages said BreastScreen Greater Western Sydney, which is managed by the NSW BCI, employed evidence-based methodology, qualified radiologists and stringent standards of practise. “All x-rays are read by two radiologists and the quality control is extremely high,” he said.

We are currently planning more digital mammography units at all our public hospitals in Sydney West Area Health Service including Auburn, Blacktown, Mt Druitt and Katoomba Hospital Prof Boyages said.  Currently we can perform screening mammograms at Castle Hill and St Marys and at fixed locations at Parramatta Hospital and Penrith Plaza.BreastScreen provides free mammograms for women over 50.
