HISTORY:

February/March, 1995:
    Patient noticed left breast pain and also described an episode of "swelling" of the left breast which was treated by his general practitioner with antibiotics.
    The swelling resolved but the pain persisted and the patient was referred on to a general surgeon.

PAST MEDICAL HISTORY:

    Diabetic, peripheral vascular disease, peptic ulcer treated with H2 antagonist (Zantac)
    Allergies: Nil
    Social History: Married with two children
    Ex-smoker (stopped six months ago-previously five cigarettes per day)
    30g of alcohol per day.
    Family History: Patient's sister was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 79 and died at age 84 with metastatic breast cancer. Two brothers died of stomach cancer at the ages of 32 and 34.

December 1995

General surgeon organised a private ultrasound which apparently showed a lesion in the breast (films unavailable).
